Nine months later, Doug's doorbell rang, and when he went to answer it, he found a baby wrapped in a tattered pink blanket with a note written in Spanish. When Doug finally deciphered the note, he was shocked to find out that the baby was his. Marina had named her Juanita, but Doug quickly decided that he would call her Joan. When Joan was old enough to realize that Doug's long term girlfriend Samantha wasn't her mother, she started asking Doug questions. All he told her was the name of his hometown- El Paso, Texas- which they'd moved from when Joan was 8. At 16, Joan decided it was time for her to go back and try to find her mother. So she had Doug and Samantha (now Doug's wife), drive her back to El Paso. She tried everything to find her mother, but with only one day left in El Paso, she was given sad news. They'd tracked down Marina's mother, Juana, who told them that Marina had committed suicide shortly after Joan had been born. At the cemetery, Joan learned more about her parents' past, including the fact that she was a product of a one night stand, and that Marina and Doug hadn't spoken from the time they fooled around up to her death. Upset and angry with her father, Joan took off, on foot, from the cemetery and never looked back. Doug and Samantha searched for her for years, but were forced to give up when one of Joan's sweaters turned up, ragged and bloody, in an alley near their former home. They assumed she'd been killed or committed suicide, and, although no body was ever recovered, decided to close her missing persons report. In reality, Joan had hidden with Juana for months, earning money and stories about her mother from her grandmother for doing minor chores and small jobs around the neighborhood. She made a few friends and was home-schooled for the rest of high school by her aunts. At age 20, she left El Paso to become a hairstylist. She studied for a year at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, MN, staying with her cousin Maria who was doing the same. At age 22, she is a successful, independent hairstylist/makeup artist. She dyes her hair regularly, and is heavy into the “Punk/Scene/Emo” style. | |||||||||
